I walked into my local hobby store on a cloudy afternoon. The bright lights and pops of color sparked my creativity.
Without a doubt, I was born to create.
I glanced around the store I had once visited several times a week. My senses came alive. I decided to browse quickly through the current fabric selection. My pace slowed as memories came flooding back. Right there in the middle of the fabric aisle, my heart began to ache. I experienced a mixture of feelings where past dreams and future ambitions collided unexpectedly.
Over the course of the year, God had reawakened dreams in my heart that had been tucked away for a season. I knew in due time, the Lord would show me when and how to pursue these passions once again. In unexpected moments like this one, He prompted a fresh stirring within and would even give me glimpses of what’s to come.
As my hands softly moved across the fabric panels, tears welled up in my eyes. The anticipation for the future was so great, yet the steps so unclear. With a faint whisper, I cried out, “Jesus, help me. Oh, Jesus.”
In the deepest place of my heart, I pleaded for Him to show me what to do amidst my emotions. How was I supposed to handle this stirring in a “Not Yet” season? In that moment, I had to get it together because I was about to “ugly cry” right there in the middle of the store. But I did the best thing I knew how to do in that moment. I communed with my God.
Lord, You made me to be creative. You’re doing something in my heart. You’ve placed big dreams inside of me. You know everything I’m feeling right now. I need to hear from You.
As tears trickled down my cheeks, I headed to the bathroom to regain composure. In that moment, the Holy Spirit nudged me with a verse: Be still and know that I am God.
Although I didn’t have all the answers, I had peace.
I knew God was right there with me doing exactly what He wanted to do in my heart. As I headed to my car, a refreshing summer rain washed over me. The ache in my heart grew into a tangible excitement.
I sat in my car, rain beads rolling down my windows. In that moment, God reminded me of a passage I had been studying in the Bible. The faith of Abraham. Abraham took God’s promise seriously and trusted Him even when he could not see all the steps involved.
Here’s a quick synopsis: God shows up one day and gives Abraham an incredible promise. This promise is life-changing. It goes way beyond anything Abraham could conjure up on his own. It’s definitely from the Lord. God speaks clearly about the promise but He doesn’t give many details in regards to the process. If Abraham is going to embark on this adventure with God, he must walk by faith, sight unseen. It requires raw dependence on God alone.
Abraham steps out into the unknown. He trusts God with his future. He walks closely with Him.
Living in a Season of Preparation
Are you in a similar season? Has God given you a dream or promise, but you are waiting on Him to move you forward? Perhaps, like Abraham, your next move seems unclear. You are taking one small step at a time. Maybe your days feel insignificant, and you’re wondering: How much longer, God? Living in a season of preparation requires complete dependency on the Lord.
You may not fully understand what God is doing. You may have no idea when He will move. But you can know this: He is working things out exactly as He desires. His timing is perfect.
Even so, staying in a constant place of trust is just plain challenging!
What dream or promise has God placed in your heart? Are you wondering what to do with them as you wait on Him?
Here’s the answer: Walk closely with Him.
Walking closely with the Lord allows us to hear His voice when He speaks. It also gives us the peace and reassurance as we wait on His timing in the preparation period. We have all we need as we walk closely with Almighty God.
Sometimes, we refer to this season as a waiting period. Simply because we are waiting on God to open a door or move us forward in some way. But this season is so much more than waiting for what’s to come. God wants to do a work inside of you to prepare you for the next step. This work is necessary to launch you forward into seeing dreams fulfilled.
Yes, this season can be long. It can drain your energy and snuff out your passion if you’re not careful. But hang on, because this season is an important part of the process. And as you see dreams fulfilled, every bit of struggle will be worth it when you see where God brings you.
Encouragement for This Season
For now, take a deep breath. Open your heart and hear this:
- You don’t have to make sense of everything you’re feeling right now. You can know that God is working.
- You don’t have to make anything happen on your own. You’re right where He wants you.
- Trust Him in the process. Even when the wait seems long. He will sustain you.
- Trust Him for the outcome. He knows the right timing.
God loves you so much. He wants to do something great in you and through you. He will move you forward at the right time. The Lord will guide your next step, and it will be in line with His will. Just like Abraham, put your complete trust in God in every way. Trust Him regardless of what your feelings or circumstances tell you.
He is God. His plans are great. His timing is best.
Be still and know that He is God.
